Wynn Hospital Update: Structural Heart Procedures Resume Downtown | Health [Video]

UTICA, N.Y. — Today is the day Utica’s Wynn Hospital is able to resume structural heart procedures, with some scheduled for Thursday.

Structural heart procedures are less invasive than open-heart surgery.

The structural heart procedures were paused at Wynn Hospital until a contract was in place for cardiac surgeon coverage.

Some structural procedures require a cardiac surgeon in the operating room.

Others only require that a cardiac surgeon be on-site, at the hospital, while the procedure is being performed.

Officials at Mohawk Valley Health System said these requirements were always the case and were not the result of any New York State Health Department order or recommendation.

Still paused at Wynn are open-heart surgeries, now paused for six weeks.

The State Health Department issued the department an immediate-jeopardy announcement back in May, regarding the open-heart surgery program, specifically, morbidity and mortality outcomes.
