BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – As inflation continues to impact families across Alabama, the WIC program recently announced brand new income eligibility requirements, meaning more could be eligible to join and get free nutritional food.

These requirements are adjusted annually because the income limit is 185% of Federal poverty guidelines, which change every year.

As defined on the ADPH website, Women, Infants and Children, or WIC, is a supplemental nutrition program for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, women who had a baby within the last six months, infants, and children under the age of five.

To get involved now, a one-person household must make $27,000 or less, a two-person household can make up to $37,000, a three-person household can make up to $47,000, a four-person household can make up to $57,000, and so on.

Jefferson County WIC Nutrition Services Coordinator Natalie Clements said it’s important to make sure more people can eat healthy foods.
