March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and as many of you know, Katie has been passionately vocal about colon cancer screening for over 20 years. Her husband, Jay, died in 1998 from colorectal cancer at age 42. Almost overnight, Katie became a national advocate for colon cancer screening, undergoing a colonoscopy in March 2000 while on the @TODAY Show, inspiring many others to do the same. In June 2022, Katie was diagnosed with breast cancer; she underwent surgery followed by radiation treatment. A public health advocate to her core, on October 2005, Katie broadcast her own mammogram to inspire the same public response as her televised colonoscopy.
