“Normally you don’t see these kind of debates happen until the fall,” said Berwood Yost, director of the Franklin and Marshall College Center for Opinion Research. “This is a pretty high-stakes debate, but it’s also a debate that’s very unlike anything we’ve seen in recent decades.”

This time, candidates will not appear in front of a live audience, similar to the first presidential debates in the 1960’s.

Shippensburg University Political Science Professor Alison Dagnes said the format could facilitate real debate free of distractions.

“It’s going to mandate that both candidates really bring their A-game and not to just be theatrical and have ‘gotcha’ lines, but really to address the issues,” Dagnes said.
