In urban India, it ranks as the second leading cause of deaths among adults and in rural areas, it claims the fourth spot. But the battle against cancer is just not fought in the cells; it is a war that takes a heavy toll on wallets and hearts alike. The out-of pocket expenditure is three times higher for private inpatient care, pushing desperate patients to sell their assets or borrow from friends & family. The problem of cancer is only growing, the cases are projected to surge to approximately 15.7 lakh by 2025 from 13.9 lakh in 2020. Amongst Indian women, breast, cervical & ovarian cancers dominate while Indian men battle mouth, lung and prostate cancer. How much of this rising incidence can be blamed on lifestyle, genes or age?
