PEORIA (25News Now) – Health officials are reporting the first sign of West Nile Virus in Peoria County this year, joining at least three other nearby counties where the virus has been detected.

A mosquito sample has tested positive for the virus, the Peoria City/County Health Department reported Tuesday.

“The positive sample is an indication that West Nile virus is circulating in our area and individuals should take appropriate preventive measures to protect their health,” the health department said in a release.

On June 13, the Woodford County Health Department said a dead blackbird found in the Metamora area tested positive for the virus. On June 8, the Fulton County Health Department said testing on pool of mosquitos collected in the Canton area came back positive, and the LaSalle County Health Department reported a robin found in Somonauk on May 15 tested positive.

No human cases have been reported locally, but symptoms include fever, nausea, headache …
