MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) – Blood transfusions can be lifesaving for those with diseases like sickle cell anemia or leukemia, and the American Red Cross hosted a blood drive today to help patients dealing with those and other diseases.
It was three years ago today that Demetry “Mack” Walker passed away following an aggressive battle with chronic myeloid leukemia. He was only 23 years old.
But in the 28 days between his day of diagnosis and his day of transition, Walker took advantage of the time he had left and began organizing a blood drive to help patients just like him who rely on these life saving donations.
Although walker passed away before he could see the completion of that project, the American Red Cross moved forward with the drive, holding it on what would have been Walker’s 24th birthday.
