Dr Ashutosh Das Sharma, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Narayana Hospital – MMI, Raipur, discusses breast cancer, a leading cause of cancer and deaths worldwide. Breast cancer grows slowly and can spread to other parts of the body, unlike benign tumours, which do not spread or grow large.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
We confirm breast cancer through a biopsy. If cancer cells are present, we stage the disease to determine if it is in the breast, abdomen, or other areas. Early-stage breast cancer can be treated with surgery, removing only the tumour and surrounding area. Depending on the surgery report, chemotherapy or radiation may be needed to prevent recurrence.
For advanced stages, where cancer has spread locally, we start with chemotherapy to shrink the tumour, followed by surgery. Post-surgery, further treatment like chemotherapy or radiation is given as needed.
With timely and appropriate treatment, breast cancer can be managed effectively.
