FIREFLY MAGIC
Darkness tempted to conquer the light
And steal the joy that shined in your life.
You hide your tears behind your smile
And muffle your trembling voice and sighs.

Classroom chairs were cold and bare
Abandoned toys were covered in dust.
Sad wind sang through the empty swings
Saying goodbye to your carefree times.

Suddenly, it’s like we
Are the only ones to see
How lucky others are
But will we ever be?

We didnt’t choose to become an island
Immersed in the stormy sea of life.
We promised holding our heads up high
Never leaving anyone behind.

We filled each other’s wounded hearts
Our souls coloured by the flickering lights.
We faced our fate with patience and braveness
Shielded by faith, we waved our flag.

Suddenly it’s like our paths
Are lined by light of fireflies
Illuminating our lives
for eternity.

One by one, a tiny light
Started burning in each one of us.
Hand in hand, here we stand
Armed with hope for whatever comes.

Magic gifted by the fireflies
Is our sunshine and fairy dust.
We spread our wings strong and wide
And we all breathe together as one.

Suddenly it’s like our paths
Are lined by light of fireflies
Illuminating our lives
for eternity.

The song FIREFLY MAGIC / ČAROLIJA KRIJESNICE was created in collaboration between TRIXY (a band from Zagreb) and the Krijesnice Youth (a support program for children and young people with malignant diseases within the Krijesnica Association), to sensitize the public and support children and young people who suffer from malignant diseases. We recorded the song in Croatian (ČAROLIJA KRIJESNICE) in 2020 and now in English.

Members of the band TRIXY (Sonja Burić, Ninna Viguc, Ninoslav Herceg i Mladen Klarić), members of the Red Noses Zoran Vukić and Petra Bokić participated in recording the video for FIREFLY MAGIC with Mihael, Jakov, Fabijan, Lucija, Ema, Sanja, Marija Magdalena, Marko, Marija, Valentina, Maja, and Ana. Unfortunately, the main topics that they must deal with daily are leukemia, malignant brain tumors, thyroid cancer, kidney cancer, and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We can get hope while witnessing the enormous courage and struggle when we notice their light and example of the “second life” or life after. Their smile hides incredible stories of pain and uncertainty, but their strength and patience transcend it all.
THEY ARE AMONG US – OUR REAL SUPERHEROES.

“Fighting a malignant disease in childhood is not just a moment of facing the diagnosis, going through thorough treatment, and finishing the treatment. It is a struggle for the whole family and friends, not only from the very beginning but also after treatment. During treatment, when little things decide the course of the disease, your whole world collapses; you experience pain and suffering that you didn’t know even existed before, and you wait for it to end. However, after the end, you must deal with that experience, with the side effects of treatment, with prejudices around you, misunderstanding, and again, you are starting to think that you are alone. Even though everything seems hopeless and pointless, you must know you are not alone! People like you make the Young Fireflies who fight together to support themselves, children undergoing treatment, and those after treatment. They offer understanding, support, guidance, and a smile. They are a great strength and support for children and young people with the experience of a malignant disease because THEY ARE NOT WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM BUT WHAT THEY WANT TO BE!” (Mihael, the Young Fireflies)

The initiator of the project song FIREFLY MAGIC / ČAROLIJA KRIJESNICE is Sonja Burić (music co-author and vocalist), who is also the mother of a malignantly ill child, now a young man. From personal experience with her son, as well as with other children suffering from malignant diseases whom she met during his treatment, and later in the Krijesnica Association through the Young Fireflies project, she witnesses their strength, patience, uniqueness, wisdom, and greatness.
