Treatment options seeing improved results for people living with vitiligo [Video]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Gilda Carter says she remembers 1999, the year she was diagnosed with vitiligo – a disease where the immune system attacks melanocytes, the cells that produce a chemical that gives your skin color.

“It actually started…can’t remember at this point which hand it was, but it was just a small spot,” Carter said looking back. “A blotch where I had lost my pigment, lost the color on my skin and for a while I just basically was just like ‘oh, just letting it go because it was just a small spot.’”

Vitiligo causes discolored patches of the skin. More than a million Americans have the condition.

There is no cure for the disease, but Carter was presented with treatment options following her diagnosis.
