Sir Paul McCartney, who turns 82 today (June 18) is one of the successful songwriters in history. Whether as a member of The Beatles or Wings or as a solo artist his music has formed the soundtrack of many lives, having sold more than 100 million albums and 100 million singles throughout his career.

The legendary star has admitted drawing on personal tragedy in his wwriting. The death of his mother Mary from breast cancer when he was just 14-years-old affected him deeply and she became somewhat of a muse for him inspiring many of his songs.

He has poignantly admitted that one of his most iconic tracks Let It Be was written after he had a dream about her which he found incredibly comforting. In 2018 he opened up about this to James Corden during an episode of Carpool Karaoke.
