TCM Take on Intermittent Fasting #shorts

It is far too early for alarm about a recent study in the news linking intermittent fasting to a 90% increased chance of cardiovascular death. This news headline was created with only an abstract released for the study, not even the full details are available yet for review and analysis. We have no idea how the authors came to these conclusions.

In TCM there is no one-size-fits all diet or style of eating that is right for everyone. Intermittent fasting can absolutely be the right fit for certain body types struggling with excess weight, obesity and insulin resistance. But others can feel awful doing it. It can also be more difficult just before and during a menstrual period.

If intermittent fasting makes you feel your best, I don’t think there’s need for concern just yet by this study. I could be wrong, but I’m willing to bet its ultimate conclusions will be more directional, perhaps suggesting the need to test intermittent fasting on various types of people. Or, perhaps those with cardiovascular risks should proceed with more caution, working closely with your physician.

The TCM way to eat for health, longevity and nutrition have been practiced for centuries. These main rules include:

1. Eat between sunrise to sundown. Make that your eating window.
2. Eat when you’re hungry, don’t snack.
3. Have regular meals, at the same time each day
4. Only eat to 80% full for each meal.
5. Appreciate the nutrition on your plate. Gratitude for your food (even if not perfectly organic, or whatever concerns you) is really important for good health and nutrition.
