Summer Food Service Program providing food for Lincoln students while classes are out [Video]

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – School lunches can be an easy thing to take for granted.

But for some, the meals provided to them during the school day are their main source of nutrition. That’s why the Food Bank of Lincoln has partnered with Lincoln Public Schools to hand out hot breakfast and lunch during to children that may not have access to consistent and good food during the summer months. It’s called the Summer Food Service Program.

“LPS sits at around 50 percent of kids that are eligible for free and reduced lunch,” Kati Umberger, a Programs Manager at the Food Bank, said. “So we know that there’s a need and we’re just happy to provide a resource.”

At more than 30 schools and rec centers across the city, volunteers and workers spend mornings and afternoons serving those aged one to 18 that show up for a meal. Those with the Food Bank say …
