Study: Car interiors have chemicals linked to cancer [Video]

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Even if you drive a car, or even if you’re usually a passenger, you’ll want to hear about a study shared by Consumer Reports.

The consumer watchdog group is sounding the alarm and asking federal officials to update fire safety standards for what’s inside vehicles.

The peer-reviewed study claims harmful flame retardants are in the air inside our cars and on car seats, so it says kids are exposed, too. Researchers say they include chemicals that are known to cause cancer.

The study was by researchers at Duke University and the Green Science Policy Institute. They found 99% of cars contained a flame retardant under investigation by the U.S. National Toxicology Program as a potential carcinogen. It further says the chemicals are linked to neurological and reproductive issues and your exposure gets worse on warmer days.
