Street medicine team caring for homeless in Albuquerque [Video]

It’s a different approach to providing health care to those who are unhoused in Albuquerque. UNM Hospital, alongside Albuquerque Community Safety and Albuquerque Police Dept. are trying to get health care to one of the most vulnerable populations in the city. “It’s rough out here for people experiencing homelessness, heat, assaults, lack of access, lack of access to bathrooms and water,” said Lindsay Fox, a physician assistant with UNM Hospital. Fox works out of a pick-up truck that’s filled with medical equipment to allow her to perform treatments for those who are homeless. “We call it Street Primary Care, we do everything from wound care to mental health assessments to management of chronic illnesses and diseases, we run into a lot of folks who are just discharged from our local hospitals, who may be struggling with how to take their medications or don’t understand next steps for wound care,” Fox …
