Living with Cancer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – What started as a hobby for Sue Fierstine has slowly become a way to give back and connect with her community.

“I started with stuffed animals. I’ve got a bunch — three different dinosaurs, cats, frog, dogs. We’ve got some ear warmers for kids and for adults.”

Through SDSU, Sue learned of Delivering Hope, a project to help cancer patients in Sioux Falls and Sioux City. This program was started by Rachel Shultz.

“I started Delivering Hope 10 years ago when my grandma was battling cancer. It was my way to cope with what she was going through. My first year of doing this, I assembled 25 bags. The next year, it just doubled, tripled, kept going,” said Schultz.

Sue has been an integral part of this growth as she began to sew port pillows, hand warmers and prayer squares for the project.
