How can skin cancer be detected early?
Early detection is key, and there are several tips to help you recognize the signs of skin cancer. Remember the acronym ABCDE:

What does ABCDE stand for in detecting skin cancer?

A – Asymmetry:
If you have new moles or notice that existing moles are becoming asymmetrical, this could be a warning sign. Asymmetrical moles should be checked by a dermatologist.

B – Border:
Check the borders of your moles. If they are changing, growing bigger, or becoming thicker, it’s important to seek a consultation with a dermatologist.

C – Color Variation:
If the color of your moles changes, such as becoming darker or showing multiple shades, this may indicate an underlying issue. It’s crucial to get these moles examined, as color variation can be a sign of skin changes.

D – Diameter:
Moles larger than 6mm in diameter, especially if they are growing in size quickly, should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

E – Evolving:
Any moles that are evolving in size, shape, or color should be assessed. Rapid changes in a mole’s characteristics can be a sign of skin cancer.

What should you do if you notice any of these signs?
If you observe any of the ABCDE signs, it’s important to visit a dermatologist immediately. They may perform a biopsy or other tests to determine if you have skin cancer.

Why is regular follow-up important?
Even if you are not experiencing any concerning symptoms, regular check-ups with your dermatologist are essential for monitoring moles and other skin lesions. Early detection through routine visits can prevent skin cancer from progressing.

Stay vigilant about your skin health this Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and consult your dermatologist if you have any concerns about moles or skin changes.
