LEAD, S.D. – Four times a year, the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) Board of Directors convenes to review the operations and developments at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF).
The board, consisting of nine members—seven of whom are appointed by the governor—is tasked with ensuring the facility’s proper functioning.
Mike Headley, Executive Director of SDSTA and Lab Director at SURF, emphasized the board’s diverse expertise. “They’re all very experienced people. A lot of them are businesspeople here in the state. Some are associated with higher education, and they provide a lot of great guidance. We [SURF] tell them about the work we’re doing and the challenges that we’re having. And they provide a lot of tremendous input. And they’re a great link to us with other organizations within the state,” he said.
