Russellville Native Charles Neblett reflects on his time as a Civil Rights Activist and Freedom Singer during Juneteenth and Black Music Month [Video]

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. (WBKO) – “When I was young, I fought for freedom.

When I was young, I fought the clan.

Who would’ve thought I’d still be fighting 60 years down the line.”

These are the lyrics to “When I Was Young,” a tune 83-year-old Charles Neblett says he sings when reflecting on his life of as a Civil Rights Activist and Freedom Singer.

Neblett has recently been diagnosed with Stage IV prostate cancer, and in commemoration of Black Music Month and Juneteenth, the family of Neblett will continue his legacy of activism by fighting the inequalities against health disparities among African American men with prostate cancer today.

“The number one thing was is he is always telling us to treat everyone the way we want to be treated but at the same time to stand up for someone who’s not as strong as you,” Neblett’s son Kwesi Neblett said.
