Overview on Urinary Bladder Cancer – Symptoms and Treatment | Dr. Tej Pratap

Bladder Cancer Awareness Month has been observed every May for years, raising awareness about a prevalent but often overlooked cancer. Urinary bladder cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of the urinary bladder. The bladder is a hollow, muscular organ in the lower abdomen that stores urine until it is released from the body through urination.

The exact cause of urinary bladder cancer is not known, but several risk factors can increase your risk of developing the disease. These include:
– Smoking: Smoking is the strongest risk factor for urinary bladder cancer. Smokers are about three times more likely to develop bladder cancer than nonsmokers.

– Exposure to certain chemicals: People who are exposed to certain chemicals in the workplace, such as arsenic, benzene, and cyclophosphamide, are at an increased risk of bladder cancer.

The symptoms of urinary bladder cancer can vary depending on the stage of the cancer, but they may include:

– Blood in the urine (hematuria): This is the most common symptom of bladder cancer. The blood may be visible in the urine (gross hematuria) or it may be microscopic (microscopic hematuria) and only detectable with a urine test.

– Pain or burning sensation during urination (dysuria): This can be caused by the irritation of the bladder lining by the tumour.

– Frequent urination (urgency): This may be caused by the tumour blocking the flow of urine from the bladder.

Diagnosis for Urinary Bladder Cancer includes:
– Urinalysis and urine cytology: These tests analyze urine for the presence of blood cells and abnormal cells, respectively.

– Imaging tests: Depending on the situation, imaging tests like CT scan, MRI scan, or intravenous pyelography (IVP) might be used to determine the cancer’s stage and spread to other organs.

– TURBT Procedure: Transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) is a surgical procedure used for both diagnosing and treating bladder cancer.

Below are a few treatment options available for Urinary Bladder Cancer:
– Surgery: The mainstay of treatment, especially for early-stage cancers.
– Medications: Used for treatment and to prevent recurrence.
– Radiation therapy: Sometimes used in combination with other therapies.

Dr. Tej Pratap Singh, Consultant – Surgical Oncology at Narayana Hospital, Jaipur notifies that if you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor to rule out other possible causes and to get a diagnosis. Early detection and treatment of bladder cancer is important for improving the chances of a cure.
