Ovarian Cancer: Symptoms, Treatment and Diagnosis | Dr. Raajit Chanana [Video]

Ovarian cancer is a serious illness affecting women and is the third most common cancer among females. Dr Raajit Chanana, Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology at Dharamshila Narayana Hospital, Delhi, shares important information about this condition on World Ovarian Cancer Day.

Ovarian cancer includes cancers of the fallopian tubes and peritoneum, but the most common type affects the ovaries directly. Around 70-90% of patients, usually around 60 years old, receive a late diagnosis. Risk factors include genetics (about 20% hereditary), obesity, ageing, and lifestyle. Symptoms often appear vague, such as gas, bloating, stomach discomfort, or constipation. In advanced stages, fluid buildup in the abdomen or chest can cause swelling and breathing problems.

Diagnosis is required if symptoms persist and aren’t explained by normal conditions. A blood test for CA 125, along with basic ultrasound, can suggest the presence of ovarian cancer. CT or PET scans help plan treatment, and a biopsy confirms the diagnosis. Surgery is the primary treatment for early-stage ovarian cancer. Chemotherapy is required before or after surgery, depending on the cancer stage. Genetic testing (HRD testing) in biopsy samples can identify cancer-related mutations and help tailor treatment.

There is no effective screening method for ovarian cancer, so Dr Chanana recommends women over 50 should get an annual abdominal ultrasound. Early detection remains crucial for better outcomes. Stay informed and stay healthy. Thank you!
