Ochsner Medical Center installs robotic surgical system [Video]

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with Ochsner Health announced the installation of new medical equipment created to assist surgeons in performing procedures.

The Ochsner system in New Orleans and Baton Rouge will be the first in the state to use the Intuitive da Vinci 5 advanced robotic system to perform minimally invasive surgeries in fields such as urology, gynecology, thoracic and general surgeries, said Ochsner officials.

“When we talk about minimally invasive surgery, we talk about doing the surgery through smaller incisions, which typically means less pain with the surgery, less pain post-operatively and quicker recoveries where there’s less time in the hospital,” said Ochsner surgeon Kyle Jakob, MD.

Ochsner officials explained that the robotic system transfers the surgeon’s hand movements to a set of robotic arms equipped with instruments to operate on the patient with a high level or precision.
