New breast cancer screening law requires insurance to cover more [Video]

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A new state law means more options to pay for ways to detect breast cancer. The law requires health insurance companies to cover breast cancer screening of more than just a mammogram. It will also cover advanced X-ray and MRI scans.

Amber Matson is like 40% of women – she’s at a higher risk of getting breast cancer because she has dense breasts. And a typical mammogram isn’t as effective – the fibrous tissue can hide cancers.

An ABIS is an ultrasound that is better at finding cancer in dense breasts. And more doctors are recommending a Fast Breast MRI… those can cost thousands of dollars out of pocket. starting January of 2025 people in Iowa will have expanded coverage for those additional tests.
