MSU hosts groundbreaking ceremony for new research facility [Video]

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan State University held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new $335 million research building in Detroit on Monday.

“I kept hearing about this partnership that was going to exist here in Detroit, where we recruit students from where we recruit, you know, researchers and clinicians and to build a partnership,” said Kevin Guskiewicz, president of Michigan State University.

The university hopes to hire over 500 doctors to research topics such as cancer, neuroscience, immunology, and hypertension in what will be over six football fields worth of laboratory space.

“This research facility and the overall commitment to the neighborhood here will build on Michigan’s rich history of being a leader in life sciences research, life sciences-related manufacturing, and the future of this industry,” said Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II.

This will be MSU’s largest collection of labs and will be able to support more than 80 individual research teams.
