GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – eating disorder experts are concerned about the impact of a new viral trend on social media.

Experts say “mewing” signals to others that you’re trying to sculpt your jaw by pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth.

The trend is the subject of several online forums. A lot of them are geared toward young men and boys.

There are emotional concerns, “especially in something like mewing where the intent the effort is to physically change some aspect of your body,” Dr. Hilmar Wagner, a doctor at an eating disorder clinic, said.

The desire some teens have to change their still-growing faces is raising alarm bells. Eating disorder specialists say that behavior can indicate an unhealthy preoccupation with body image.

Mewing is also a way to avoid communication or talking.
