May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month: How You Can Help [Video]

Cancer awareness – specifically skin cancer awareness or melanoma awareness – are incredibly important to me as a cancer patient, and the world as a whole.

We have tremendous education around the importance of sunscreen, protective covering, getting your skin checked, and yet still, nearly 10,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day in the United States alone.

As a stage 4 melanoma patient who has had two skin cancer diagnoses in the last six years, I can tell you from experience that I knew the risks, knew my family history, and had great support, but it still didn’t matter; cancer is typically not something you think about until it’s too late.

So in order to make skin cancer awareness more useful in the modern age, what can we do?

I would argue that talking about cancer as a human experience is the best thing that non-medical professionals can do. Sharing our experiences and letting other people know that they aren’t alone in this confusing situation. This applies to patients, family members, loved ones, and caretakers.
