BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man who was shot and wounded by sheriff’s deputies during an incident on Shellabarger Road died days later, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner identified the man as Robert Eugene Robinson, 47, of Bakersfield. Robinson was shot by deputies after deputies were called to a home on Shellabarger Road for a welfare check on May 14.

Robinson was taken to Kern Medical for treatment of his injuries and was pronounced dead on May 17.

Sheriff’s officials said deputies were called to the Shellabarger Road home because Robinson was reportedly suffering a mental health crisis and was possibly armed. KCSO said deputies used “multiple de-escalation techniques” during the incident, but Robinson allegedly fired at deputies, prompting deputies to fire back.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
