One form of liver cancer treatment involves inserting a needle into the tumour and heating it up to cause the death of cancerous cells. However, making sure that the needle reaches the tumour and only heats up its cells, and not healthy ones, is difficult. The OICR Imaging Program has developed a technique that uses machine learning to track the location of the tumour and compensate for movement caused by the patient breathing.
