King Charles Welcomes Japan’s Emperor: First State Visit Since Cancer Diagnosis [Video]

The three-day state visit, hosted by King Charles III, began on Saturday as the royals arrived at Stansted Airport.

The couple will spend seven days in the UK, attending private events before their official state visit begins on 25 June.

This visit has been four years in the making, following the cancellation of their initial trip in 2020 due to the pandemic.

On Monday, Emperor Naruhito visited the Thames Barrier as part of his week’s trip to the UK.

The Emperor and Empress will begin the royal aspect of their visit on Tuesday, when they will be greeted at their hotel by Prince William, followed by an official welcome ceremony at Horse Guards Parade.

Later in the day, the King will host a lunch with extended members of the Royal Family, featuring a viewing of Japanese artefacts from the Royal Collection.

In the evening, the customary state banquet will be held, during which both the King and the Emperor will deliver speeches.

This is the King’s first state visit since being diagnosed with cancer, and the Emperor’s first since ascending the throne in 2019.

Emperor Naruhito expressed deep gratitude that King Charles will host them, despite his ongoing cancer treatment.
