Iowa Sen. Majority Leader announces brain tumor diagnosis [Video]

DES MOINES, Iowa — A key figure in the Iowa Legislature has begun treatment for a recent brain tumor diagnosis. 

Iowa Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver, R-Polk County, was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly after the 2024 legislative session ended, according to a press release. 

“My physicians and care team have implemented a treatment plan and I have begun radiation therapy,” Whitver writes in part. “I am responding well to the initial treatments and am grateful for my medical team.” 

Whitver plans to remain in the Iowa Senate as Majority Leader during his treatment. 

“Our Senate Republican team is full of capable and accomplished people and I am grateful for the trust and support of the Senate Republican Caucus,” Whitver said in a statement. 

Whitver also thanked his colleagues and his community for all the kind words he has received.
