Investigation finds concerning levels of pesticide in fruits and vegetables [Video]

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Check your fridge as you pack those lunches and prepare those dinners. Some of the food you eat could contain concerning levels of pesticides, according to a consumer investigation.

Consumer Reports says some fresh, frozen and even canned non-organic fruits and vegetables could have high levels of pesticides.

The investigation revealed some of the highest levels of pesticides were found in produce imported into the United States.

In certain studies, pesticides have been linked to causing cancers, birth defects and other health issues over time.

The consumer watchdog found a majority of highly contaminated imports were typically frozen strawberries. Officials say because they grow low to the ground, they’re easier for bugs to get to. Strawberries often top lists of foods contaminated with insecticides.

Imported and domestic green beans also tested high for pesticides — even samples labeled as organic.
