VETERAN journalist Tommie Gorman vowed to “bring hope” to RTE viewers in his final documentary about his decades-long cancer struggle.

The outstanding former RTE Northern and European editor – who delivered his optimistic message in the 2021 documentary Ireland, Cancer and Me – died on Tuesday surrounded by family aged just 68.

The Sligo Rovers football fanatic – survived by wife Ceara Roche and their two children Moya and Joe – spent 40 years at the cutting edge of news, retiring in April 2021 but continuing on with columns until his death.

Announcing his death, his devastated family said: “Tommie was a cherished husband, father, brother, and friend whose innate kindness and generosity of spirit touched the lives of all who knew him.”
