BRIGHTON, Colo. — For hunters, there are few decisions more personal than what bullet you choose to shoot. Selecting the right ammunition ensures hunters hit their mark and inflict the least suffering possible.

Now, a growing movement of hunters and biologists is shedding light on the effects of lead bullets, which can sicken scavenging animals and lead to long-term environmental side effects.

“One of the greatest things about educating hunters about using alternatives to lead while they’re out in the field is that it’s one of these conservation problems that we can solve,” said Aaron Kindle, the director of sporting advocacy for the National Wildlife Federation.

“It really is as simple as loading a different round in your gun the next time you head out.”
