About Dr. Steven J. Frank, MD
Steven J. Frank, MD, is an endowed tenured professor of Radiation Oncology and holds the Bessie McGoldrick Professorship in Clinical Research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Frank is the Executive Director of the Particle Therapy Institute and Deputy Head of Strategy for the Division of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Frank’s lab is studying the biologic enhancement factor of proton therapy and FLASH radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Dr. Frank has over 300 peer-reviewed publications, has authored many book chapters, and has recently published the first textbook on Proton Therapy based on the MD Anderson experience. Dr. Frank is amongst the first, if not the first, to use Intensity-Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) to treat head and neck tumors, and he is the Principal Investigator of an NIH/NCI-sponsored multi-institutional 440 patient Phase II/III randomized trial in advanced stage oropharyngeal cancer that compares outcomes after chemoradiation therapy with IMRT versus IMPT. Dr. Frank chairs the Head and Neck subcommittee for the Particle Therapy Cooperative Oncology Group, is a member of the Board and Executive Committee for the National Association of Proton Therapy, and is the past-chair of the head and neck oral boards examination for the American Board of Radiology. He has been funded by the NIH, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Texas Ignition Fund, Hitachi, Eli Lilly, C4 Imaging, and MD Anderson. Dr. Frank is a fellow of the American Brachytherapy Society, American College of Radiology, and a 2022 Fellow of the American Society of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Frank has also just been awarded the Henscke Award, the highest award bestowed by the American Brachy Society for his dedication, commitment and success in the brachy medical arena for all of North America. The awards ceremony was just held in Vancouver, CA.
