JACKSON COUNTY, MI – With a heat wave bearing down on the state this week, Jackson is joining other Michigan communities in offering safety advice and shelters in preparation for the sweltering weather.

On days when the thermometer reaches 80 degrees or higher, it’s important to take extra safety precautions to beat the heat, Jackson County Health Department officials said.

Infants and children are at an especially high risk of heat-related illness and rely on their caregivers to keep them cool and hydrated.

Never leave infants or children in parked cars, which can heat up to dangerous temperatures very quickly even if the window is cracked open, officials said. Parents are also advised to dress infants and children in loose, lightweight and light-colored clothing.
