As this week’s heat wave begins, it’s a good idea to be able to recognize the health risks that come along with extreme heat and what you can do to help others who may be affected.
Two of the more common heat related illnesses are heat strokes and heat exhaustion. While sounding similar, their symptoms vary and require different remedies.
Heat exhaustion can present many signs and symptoms. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
- Excessive sweating
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Pale skin
- Muscle cramps
To help someone suffering from heat exhaustion, the CDC recommends moving them to a cooler area, putting cool cloths around their body, and having them drink water. If conditions worsen or don’t go away, get professional help.
Heat strokes are more severe and often require immediate help from medical professionals. Symptoms include:
- Extremely high body temperature
- Confusion
- Going in and out of consciousness
