Greenwood Genetic Center celebrates its 50th anniversary [Video]

GREENWOOD, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – About an hour south of Greenville, down miles of country roads sits the Greenwood Genetic Center. The campus, with the backdrop of greenery and fountains, spans several buildings. This year leaders are celebrating their 50th anniversary. They have come a long way with research, diagnosis, and treating patients.

Three-year-old Nora can run, jump, and play. She has met most of her childhood milestones for development. But her life would have been drastically different if not for treatment and early diagnosis.

“When Nora was born she had some trouble breathing issues and so they took her to the nursery,” Nora’s mother Luci Eysen said. “It was then that they found she had an enlarged heart muscle.”

Within days Nora was diagnosed with Infantile Pompe Disease.

“I was sick to my stomach, terrified and confused,” Eysen said. “You look up this disease online and you see horrible things, like death by age two.”
