MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT)- Amid this major heatwave, it’s important to stay cool and hydrated.

Dr Bobby Mukkamala of Genesee County, now President-Elect of the American Medical Association, told ABC12 it’s important to notice the signs of heat exhaustion to stop it from turning into heat stroke.

Heat exhaustion is what happens when the body invests more energy into staying cool during extreme heat.

Symptoms include excessive sweating, clammy skin, nausea, and dizziness, among others.

If left untreated, heat exhaustion turn into heatstroke. Here’s how to recognize it.

“You have to find shelter, right? You need to cool down. Getting into a cool environment, getting ice packs where there’s a lot of blood flow,” explained Mukkamala. “The vessels in the shoulders, the armpits… cool down the blood as it’s circulating in the rest of the body.”
