First Alert Safety Desk: Sun Safety [Video]

Types of Cancer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Recent surveys found that younger adults aren’t doing enough to protect themselves when it comes to the sun.

The American Academy of Dermatology found that Gen Z adults between the ages of 18 and 26 are at risk for skin cancer due to increasing rates of tanning and burning, and lack of knowledge of sun protection knowledge.

Statistics show that one in four Gen Z adults already report skin damage from the sun, but sun safety is important at any age.

You can do several things to protect yourself, including finding shade when you can, wearing UV-protective clothing, applying a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapplying sunscreen every two hours.

It is also advised to avoid tanning beds as the ultraviolet light can cause skin cancer and premature skin aging.
