Fiber artists participate in wool challenge to raise money for cancer patients | Local News [Video]

BANGOR — The Mainely Spinners are a team of knitters passionate about fiber arts and helping others.

On Saturday, they competed in an international challenge to handcraft a wool sweater after shearing a sheep by hand and spinning the wool into yarn.

“Squirrelly Dan – that’s the name of the sheep and he’s resting back in the trailer now. All the wool is off and they’re on to spinning and knitting which is great,” shared Erin Percival Carter, who runs Shepherdess of Black Sheep and allowed one of her sheep to be sheared for the event.

The event raises money for cancer care at Sarah’s House of Maine, where cancer patients and caregivers can stay for free when receiving care in the Bangor area.

Handmade fiber crafts were available for sale at the event, and last year’s sweater is being raffled off with all proceeds going to Sarah’s House.
