A firm called 3D Systems has devised a patient-specific cranial implant solution called “VSP® PEEK Cranial Implant.”
This implant aims to restore defects in the skull via cranioplasty procedures. Cranioplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs defects or deformities in the skull typically from traumatic injuries such as fractures or gunshot wounds.
Additionally, the procedure also removes tumors and treats other medical conditions impacting the skull.
Now, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared a customized 3D-printed solution to precisely fit a patient’s skull.
The clearance by the FDA has paved the way for the widespread adoption of the firm’s self-contained, cleanroom, environment-based printing system.
