Family, friends come together to support veteran CPS teacher amid 5-year cancer battle [Video]

CHICAGO — There was a big turnout at a benefit in Marionette Park on Sunday for a veteran CPS teacher who is in the fight of her life.

Tammie Hoiseck Kampwirth is a resilient warrior who has faced a five-year battle with cancer.

Diagnosed with stage two lung cancer in 2019, she underwent treatment and lung surgery, entering remission for six months. Unfortunately, the cancer resurfaced in her brain, leading to an inoperable stage of brain cancer.

As a CPS teacher for over 25 years working in the city’s Englewood neighborhood, Tammy continues her fight with unwavering strength, despite the uphill battle she is waging.

“I am so blessed. I have so many friends, I have such good family. I have known so many people since I moved here when I was eight. My teaching staff is here. I’m just overwhelmed, I’m blessed,” Kampwirth said.
