Last year, Scientific American reported that extreme heat is was number-one weather-related cause of death in the U.S. This weekend, temperatures were high in the Dallas area, according to the National Weather Service.

With temperatures in the mid-90s and high humidity, it’s feeling like 105 to 111 degrees in the shade this weekend. Working or playing in this humid heat without taking regular breaks out of the sun for air conditioning and water puts you at risk of heat exhaustion.

The symptoms of heat exhaustion are heavy sweating; cool, pale or clammy skin; a rapid pulse, feeling faint, dizzy or nauseous; vomiting and muscle cramps.

If you don’t recognize these symptoms and you’re still staying outdoors, you’re at risk of having a Heat stroke. During heat stroke, you actually stop sweating, so your body struggles to regulate its temperature. You’ll have a throbbing headache and a rapid strong pulse as your body temperature rises above 103 degrees.
