After the European Commission authorized marketing foods containing cricket and beetle larvae in early 2023, rumors surrounding the measure’s consequences began to swirl in several languages.
Some viral posts in Hungarian alleged the new ingredients would be hidden from the public, while others said they could cause cancer.
However, AFP journalist Ede Zaborszky explains that EU legislation requires that foods containing insect-derived ingredients be appropriately labeled.
Experts also told AFP that there is no evidence to suggest that chitin, a substance found in the shells of insects, could cause cancer.
