Doctors emphasize summer sun protection [Video]

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – As more people head outside to enjoy their summer days, it’s crucial to remember the importance of sun protection.

While exposure to sunshine offers many health benefits, unprotected sun exposure can lead to many health risks. Skin cancer is an extreme problem in the United States, with more people getting diagnosed each year than all other cancers combined.

Doctor Abbie Miller, the Chief Medical Officer for the commercial plan in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota for United Healthcare, says most skin cancer is associated with sun exposure.

“It’s so incredibly important to wear sunscreen and protect your skin now so that you’re not having to deal with those skin cancer diagnoses later, and for those people who do have some sun damage to their skin, it’s going to be really important to make sure that you’re getting in for skin checks,” Miller said.
