Debunking skin cancer [Video]

It’s skin cancer awareness month. And doctors are warning people of the myth that people with dark skin are immune to melanoma. They are calling it “a dangerous misconception” that has caused some people not to protect themselves against UV rays that come from the sun. People with darker skin tones have more melanin. And melanin protects against sun damage and *lowers the risk of skin cancer but it is not a complete shield. When melanoma develops in people of color, it’s often diagnosed at a later stage and is more aggressive. Experts say often times it appears in unexposed areas.
