Through a hands-on program focusing on diabetes, the food bank is providing rural areas with access to free nutrition classes and support to manage diabetes.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi was once ranked among the fattest cities in Texas and although that number has decreased over the years, diabetes remains a major issue especially in rural areas.
“We do see higher rates in zip codes where residents may not have access to preventive care, nutrition and food,” Public Health Director for the City of Corpus Christi Dr. Fauzia Khan said.
Dr. Khan said we are experiencing a high rate of obesity and diabetes in South Texas and that the need for diabetes education about grows as you go into smaller communities.
