Chinese bio firm pauses planned Worcester facility set to employ 200 [Video]

A Chinese pharmaceutical company is pausing construction of a 189,500 square-foot facility in Worcester, according to Thomas Matthews, a spokesman for City Manager Eric Batista.

WuXi Biologics, a company that produces medicines using biological sources such as cells, told the city it had halted construction its $300 million facility to evaluate its interior design. The facility site is located at the Reactory, a 46-acre park with sites for biotech and bio-manufacturing companies that are interested in working in Worcester.

WuXi Biologics did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday.

Matthews said the company told the city its evaluation is being conducted to determine if the facility will meet the needs of its customers and did not provide an immediate timeline of when the project will resume or be completed. The company told city officials that despite the pause, it remains committed to seeing the project completed, according to Matthews.
