Cancer survivor advocates for access to early detection screening tests [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Kimberly Alexander is in Washington D.C. advocating for the Nancy Garder Sewell Medicare Multi Cancer Early Detection Screen Coverage Act.

The bill, created by Representative Terri Sewell, would allow medicare enrollees to access Multi-Cancer Early Detection Tests once it’s approved by the FDA.

Multi-Cancer Early Detection Tests use blood or urine to test for multiple cancers at one time.

“It’s less invasive, it’s more accessible, and that’s really a special opportunity in traditionally underserved communities and or, you know, to kind of help with the disparity in cancer diagnosis. It would go a long way to help make it more available to more people,” said Alexander.

Alexander is a cancer survivor herself but lost her parents to the same cancer in 2016 and 2021. She believes if they had access to these types of tests, her parents could still be here today.
