BOATERS AND CAMPERS: Doctors warn about dangers of open air poisoning [Video]

TABLE ROCK LAKE, Mo. (KY3) – It is a warning for boaters and campers about carbon monoxide. It only takes a few minutes to reach dangerous levels, even in the open air.

Doctors in the Ozarks say it can happen very quickly in the open air, especially while boating. Carbon monoxide from the engine can build up when the boat is stationary or moving slowly.

Symptoms of poisoning can be similar to seasickness. Operators at a Table Rock Lake marina say it luckily has not had any cases but always warns renters.

“There are some things to watch for, like nausea and dizziness, and they can happen quickly,” said Adam Cross of Baxter Marina. “Some of the things that we recommend our customers is to make sure that they’re in well-ventilated areas.”

Cross says to make sure your boat has a detector if it has a cabin or an enclosure.
